Egremont hosts the World Gurning Championships, so nobody expects you to look your best on a first date. The contest belongs to the Crab Fair, which grew out of a market and fair charter granted around 1266 and is still going.
The rest of the town is calmer. It's a market town of about 6,000 people on the River Ehen, just outside the Lake District National Park, with the ruins of a 12th-century castle at the southern end of Main Street and a market every Friday. Iron ore built the place, and Florence Mine, just to the south, was the last deep iron ore mine working in Western Europe until 2008. The old mine now hosts the Florence Arts Centre, whose gigs, theatre and stand-up make a ready-made first date, as long as you check what's on.

Egremont's own railway station closed long ago. The A595 bypasses the town, the nearest stations are Nethertown and, with a fuller service, St Bees, and a bus runs to Whitehaven, Workington and Maryport. Whoever is meeting you may be on a timetable, so agree the last bus home before you agree the drink.
