Windermere hookups: the town that doesn't touch the lake
The town of Windermere doesn't touch Windermere. It sits about half a mile east of the lake, and it's Bowness-on-Windermere, the older town it has merged with, that has the shore.
The two share one urban area and one civil parish, and about 4,800 people lived in the town at the 2021 census. The railway made Windermere what it is: a station and a hotel of the same name opened in 1847, and the town grew from there. Tourism, drawn by the lake and the scenery, means a stranger in the street is nothing unusual.
For a first meeting, Bowness has the better setting, because that's where the piers are. Boats set off from them around the lake, many calling at Ambleside or at Lakeside, where there is a restored railway, so a trip gives a first date a view and an easy exit at the next stop.
Two peaks near Windermere: under 25 and 45 to 54
Draw a 60-mile circle round Windermere and the age shape is an unusual one. Nearly half of members are 18 to 24. The 25 to 34s are about one in six, the 35 to 44s dip below one in ten, and then the 45 to 54s bounce back to a fifth, with the over-55s on roughly one in ten. Women make up a bit more than a fifth of the circle. If you're 35 to 44, the pool is thinner for you here, so keep an open mind about distance. Kendal first, then Keswick or Penrith
Kendal is the closest of our towns at just over seven miles, and the easy answer when neither of you wants a long drive. Keswick is about eighteen miles off and Penrith twenty, while Carnforth and Morecambe, over the county line in Lancashire, sit at eighteen and twenty-two.
