Millom is a town the ironworks made, and then lost. Until the works opened in 1866 this was a village around Holy Trinity Church and the castle. The town that grew up around the works took in the neighbouring village of Holborn Hill and passed 10,000 people by the 1960s, then had a tougher time once the works closed in 1968. Roughly 6,000 live here now.

It stands on the north shore of the Duddon estuary, just outside the Lake District National Park, with historic links to rugby league. Barrow-in-Furness looks close on the map, under eight miles away, but it's 23 by road, so don't promise to be there in ten minutes. It's still the obvious place to meet. Further afield, and again on the map, Egremont is a little over 21 miles away, Kendal a little over 22 and Windermere just under 19, while Whitehaven is 26 miles north.
