No strings in a town built around a harbour

Maryport grew up from the middle of the 18th century around a new harbour at the mouth of the River Ellen, on the Solway Firth. The Romans had been there first, and the site of their settlement, Alauna, is part of the town today. It sits at the northern end of the former Cumberland Coalfield, about five miles north-west of the Lake District National Park, and some 8,500 people live in the built-up area, with the village of Flimby in the same parish.

Cockermouth is about six and a half miles away and Aspatria about seven and a half, which makes either an easy place to meet halfway. Cleator Moor, Wigton, Egremont and Keswick are 13 to 17 miles off. Over the Scottish border in Dumfries and Galloway, Annan is about 21 miles away and Dumfries 25, so a match from the other side of the Solway is not out of the question.
