Salt, silk and no-strings fun across Cheshire
Salt has come out of the ground in the middle of Cheshire since Roman times, and it still does. The mines at Winsford, Middlewich and Northwich go back that far, and along with cheese and silk, salt is what the county is known for. Around those towns spreads the Cheshire Plain, flat dairy country split by the Mid-Cheshire Ridge, and in the east the land rises into the Pennines and a corner of the Peak District.
The largest place isn't Chester but Warrington, up on the Mersey with Runcorn, Widnes and Ellesmere Port, the most densely populated strip of the county. Chester, with its Roman walls and red sandstone cathedral, is in the west, Crewe in the south and Macclesfield in the east. Then there's the Golden Triangle around Alderley Edge, Wilmslow, Prestbury and Knutsford, some of the most affluent corners of the north. About 1.14 million people live across the county.
One in three is a woman around Cheshire
That's the headline. About a third of our members in and around Cheshire are women, a bigger share than across the site as a whole. By age, people between 25 and 34 make up the largest slice, nearly four in ten; another quarter are 18 to 24, and something like one in five has turned 45. Inside the county, members come from Chester, Crewe and Northwich; beyond it, from Manchester, Liverpool and Wigan, Guide Bridge and Little Hulton.

Meet in the middle
Winsford and Middlewich are within a couple of miles of the centre of the county and Northwich about four, so they split the drive fairly for two people coming from opposite ends.
Walk the walls
Chester's Roman fortress walls are perhaps the oldest building work in Cheshire still standing. Walk a stretch together, then find somewhere for a drink.
Hill forts with a view
Iron Age forts top the sandstone ridges at Helsby, Frodsham and Bickerton Hill. The climb gives you time to talk, and the view gives you something to share.
Castles and old stones
Beeston Castle is built of the local red sandstone, and the Bridestones near Congleton go back to Neolithic times. History makes easy small talk.
