Silk, hills and hookups in Macclesfield

Silk buttons were being made in Macclesfield by the middle of the 17th century and, a hundred years later, the town had grown into a major silk-manufacturing centre. Several of the mills are still standing, the Silk Museum tells the story, and the old town up on the hilltop around St Michael's Church was granted its charter as long ago as 1261.

That gives a first meeting plenty to work with. About 54,000 people live in the built-up area. The Georgian Town Hall, which dates from 1823, anchors the centre, and Macclesfield Forest lies to the east, holding two reservoirs and Tegg's Nose. A daylight walk out there tells you more about a match than an hour of messaging, and the town is waiting for the evening afterwards.

Bollington next door, Poynton and Congleton close behind

Next door is Bollington, only two and a half miles off, with Poynton about six and Congleton seven and a half, which is also the distance to Whaley Bridge. Buxton is under nine and Stockport a little over ten, with Manchester sixteen miles up the road for a proper night out.

The town sits close to the borders of Greater Manchester, Derbyshire and Staffordshire, so a match from over a county line is often nearer than it sounds. Whaley Bridge and Buxton are in Derbyshire and Leek is in Staffordshire, and all three are within twelve miles.
