Stockport Viaduct dominates the western approach to the town. In the 16th century this was a small place on the south bank of the river, known for growing hemp and making rope. Then came one of the first mechanised silk factories in the British Isles, then cotton, and alongside it the hat trade, which was exporting more than six million hats a year by 1884. The last hat works closed in 1997, but the football club, Stockport County, is still The Hatters.

Count the built-up area and you get about 118,000 people; count the whole borough and it is nearly 295,000. Stockport can stand on its own, and Manchester, six miles to the north-west, is there if you fancy a change.

A landmark, a nickname and a good first line

Stockport is easy to describe to someone who's never been. Coming in from the west, the viaduct dominates the view, which gives a match from out of town a landmark to aim for. The town sits on both banks of the Mersey, the north side historically Lancashire and the rest Cheshire, so agree a proper meeting spot rather than just a district.

If you want an opener that isn't "hello", try the football. Stockport County are known as The Hatters, a nod to the hat trade, and an easy subject to raise in a first message. Keep the first meeting public and keep a friend in the loop.
