Dukinfield hookups start where the hill begins
The standard way to say it is DUK-in-feeld, but locally it comes out as DUUK-in-fi-yuhld, so getting it right is a cheap way to sound like you belong. The town sits on the south bank of the Tame, directly opposite Ashton-under-Lyne, at the point where the Cheshire Plain meets the Pennines. That makes it the first town on the hill, and the hill is steep.
Astley Street climbs some 120 feet to the crest of the ridge beside the town hall, and the terraced park a quarter of a mile along King Street towards Hyde is more than 90 feet higher at the top than at the bottom. Wear shoes you can walk in. Coal mining and cotton built Dukinfield; it was part of Cheshire until 1974 and now belongs to Greater Manchester, with about 21,000 people in the built-up area.
