There was a time when Oldham spun more cotton than France and Germany put together.
For a place with little history to speak of before the 19th century, it moved fast. Oldham became one of the first industrialised towns anywhere, a Pennine boomtown on high ground between the rivers Irk and Medlock, and for a while it counted among the most important centres of the cotton trade in England. Then textiles declined in the middle of the 20th century, and the last mill closed in 1998. Plans for the town centre have leaned towards further education and the performing arts.
It's still a big town. The borough around it held about 242,000 people at the 2021 census, Rochdale is five miles to the north-west and Manchester city centre seven to the south-west. Oldham sits in a ring of towns, so nobody has to travel far
Count outwards from the town centre and the neighbours come thick and fast. Middleton is about three and a half miles off and Ashton-under-Lyne a little under four, with Stalybridge only just beyond. Dukinfield, Rochdale and Hyde are not much further, and Manchester is the bigger night out if you want one.
