Rochdale's skyline tells you where you are. The Gothic Revival Town Hall, opened in 1871 and often counted among the finest municipal buildings in the country, stands among old cotton mills and the seven tower blocks known locally as the Seven Sisters. Wool made the town's merchants wealthy by the early 18th century, and the mills followed in the 19th. The place is older than any of it, though: it's in the Domesday Book as Recedham Manor and had a royal charter by 1251.

It sits about 450 feet up in the valley of the River Roch, in the foothills of the South Pennines, with Blackstone Edge and Saddleworth Moor close by to the east. On every other side it runs into its neighbours with barely a field in between:

• Heywood
• Shaw and Crompton

That's useful if you're after sex in Rochdale. The town has about 111,000 people and the wider borough around 224,000, and because everything joins up, someone in Heywood or Milnrow is only a short trip away.

Meet by the Town Hall, or make a match day of it

For a first meeting, the Town Hall is the landmark nobody can miss, and the centre around it is the natural place to start. Transport for Greater Manchester owns the town's bus station and coordinates services across the area, which makes getting in and out simple to plan.

Match days give you a ready-made plan. Rochdale AFC and the Rochdale Hornets both play at Spotland Stadium, so there's football or rugby league to argue about before you decide whether the evening carries on.
