The Romans founded Chester in the 70s AD as the fort of Deva Victrix, one of the main army camps in Roman Britain, and it grew into a major civilian town. A minster church founded in 689 became its first cathedral, the Angles strengthened the walls against the Danes, and the Normans took the city late, building a castle to keep the town and the nearby Welsh border under control. It has been a city since 1541.
The walls are Grade I listed and almost complete, with just one 100-metre gap, and the city has several medieval buildings besides. Around 93,000 people live in the built-up area on the River Dee. Chester is the historic county town of Cheshire, the most populous settlement in the borough of Cheshire West and Chester, and the second largest in Cheshire after Warrington.

The border is close enough that a date can end up in another country, since Broughton is under five miles away in Wales and Wrexham a little over ten. Ellesmere Port is six miles north, Frodsham about ten, and Runcorn, Widnes, Birkenhead and Winsford lie roughly twelve to fifteen miles off.
