Bognor Regis: royal name, no strings
Bognor became Bognor Regis in 1929, by royal consent, after a royal stay of three months in the area earlier that year.
The resort itself goes back to the late 18th century, when it was laid out on an undeveloped stretch of sand and gravel coast. It grew slowly at first, then quickly once the railway arrived in 1864. Felpham and Aldwick have since become part of the town, along with North and South Bersted, and the built-up area had nearly 64,000 people at the 2011 census.
That's a decent-sized town for a hookup, and a seaside one at that: 56 miles from London, six from Chichester and 16 from Portsmouth, with Brighton 24 miles away. A resort town is used to new faces, which helps when you'd rather your first meeting didn't feel like front-page news.
