Steyning sits at the northern end of the gap the River Adur cuts through the South Downs, four miles inland from Shoreham-by-Sea. Together with Bramber and Upper Beeding it forms one small built-up area around the river crossing, in the Horsham district of West Sussex, and the town's population is a little under 10,000.
