On the map it's one city. On the ground it's two seaside resorts, Brighton and Hove, with a scattering of villages in the same district.
A single city council runs the lot, and the city counts as part of East Sussex for ceremonial purposes. In 2014 it joined neighbouring councils to form the Greater Brighton City Region. Put the two resorts together with Worthing and Littlehampton in West Sussex and you have the second most populous built-up area in South East England, behind only South Hampshire.
That's the part that matters for a hookup. You aren't looking at one town and its suburbs but at a built-up stretch that carries on into the next county, so the people within easy reach go well past the city boundary. Inside a 40-mile radius of the city, about one in five of our members is 45 to 54, against roughly one in seven across the UK, and another one in ten is 55 or over. Brighton side, Hove side, or out of town
In a city made of two resorts, the first question is which one. Settle on Brighton or Hove before you settle anything else, then pick somewhere public that you can both find without a map.
If you'd rather meet beyond the city, Shoreham-by-Sea is about six miles away and Peacehaven just over six. Lewes, at seven, makes a change of scene, and Newhaven, Burgess Hill and Steyning are all within ten. Worthing is only a little further.
