Worthing was a small mackerel-fishing hamlet until the late 18th century, when it remade itself as an elegant Georgian resort, and today about 113,000 people live in the borough, the second largest part of the Brighton and Hove built-up area.
It's a working town as much as a seaside one, with a big service sector led by financial services and employers that include HM Revenue & Customs, the Environment Agency and Southern Water. It also has three theatres, one of Britain's oldest cinemas in the Dome, and an Art Deco pier that was hailed as the finest in Britain in 2019. Beyond the centre, the old villages of Broadwater, Durrington, Goring and Tarring now make up the north and west of the town, and High Salvington and Findon Valley climb the lower slopes of the Downs to around 120 metres.

Worthing's nearest neighbours are all a short hop away. Shoreham-by-Sea is under five miles off and Steyning a little over five; Littlehampton is seven, and Brighton eleven miles east along the A27. Bognor Regis, Burgess Hill and Petworth are all between thirteen and sixteen miles away. The A27 also heads west to Chichester, Portsmouth and the M27, the A24 runs north through Horsham towards London and the M25, and the A259 follows the coast from Hampshire to Kent, so meeting halfway is rarely complicated.
