The River Arun runs out into the Channel at Littlehampton, and the town has grown up along its eastern bank. The harbour and the yacht moorings are on the river, East Beach is on the seafront, and across the water on the west bank sit Littlehampton Redoubt and the Climping sand dunes. It began as a fishing port and still takes fifty or sixty cargo ships a year, landing timber, stone and marine aggregates, but most of the boats you'll see now are leisure craft visiting from around the UK and Europe.

About 55,000 people live in the town and the places that have grown into it, Wick, Lyminster and Rustington among them. On its own, that's a small pond. But Littlehampton is the western tip of a coastal conurbation of nearly half a million people that runs through Worthing to Brighton, and the trains go straight there, which makes it a much bigger patch for a hookup than the town's size suggests.

Meet by the harbour, stay for the fireworks

A first meeting here can be as daft or as grown-up as you like. Harbour Park, at the entrance of the river, has a rollercoaster, a log flume, arcades and a couple of restaurants, which takes the pressure off nicely. The Littlehampton Concert Band plays its own Last Night of the Proms concert every year. And once a year the Littlehampton Bonfire Society, which has organised it since 1952, puts on a bonfire procession, a bonfire and fireworks as part of the Sussex bonfire tradition: a crowd, plenty of noise and a good excuse to stand close together.

For a daytime date, the South Downs National Park begins three miles north of town, and footpaths and the railway link Littlehampton with Arundel and Amberley.
