The B2145 is the only road in or out of Selsey, crossing the inlet at Pagham Harbour on a bridge at a spot known as the ferry. At one time a flood tide cut the town off altogether, and a boat waited there to carry passengers and horses across to Sidlesham.
The town sits at the southern tip of the Manhood Peninsula, almost cut off from the rest of Sussex by the sea, with Bracklesham Bay to the west, Pagham Harbour to the east and Selsey Bill at the very end. About 10,700 people lived in the parish at the 2011 census.
