Lewes is made for meeting halfway

Lewes grew up where the River Ouse cuts through the South Downs, and the gap made it a market town that roads and trade passed through. Today it's the county town of East Sussex, with about 16,700 people in the parish, and its history is on show: Lewes Castle, Lewes Priory, Southover Grange with its public gardens, and a timber-framed Wealden hall house from the 1500s. In 1264 a battle was fought here. Two names carry well beyond the town, too: the Lewes Bonfire celebrations and, in the surrounding area, the Glyndebourne festival.

For a hookup, Lewes works as a meeting place as much as a home town. Brighton is seven miles to the south-west and Eastbourne eleven to the south-east, which makes the town a natural halfway point between the two, and Hastings is 25 miles east. And when the Bonfire celebrations come round, you have a ready-made reason to suggest meeting in town.
