By the Met Office's count, West Sussex gets more sunshine than any other county in the UK, an average of about 1,900 hours a year over the 29 years to 2011, and Bognor Regis often tops the whole of mainland England.
The South Downs cross it from east to west, a chalk ridge that splits the county in two. South of the hills, a narrow coastal plain holds a string of large towns: Worthing, Littlehampton and Bognor Regis, with Worthing and Littlehampton part of the same built-up area as Brighton and Hove. North of the Downs the land is mostly rural, but Crawley, the largest town at around 106,600 people, and Horsham sit in the north-east, and the cathedral city of Chichester, the county town, lies in the south-west near the Hampshire border. In all, about 925,000 people live here.
The coast is one long run of towns, each spilling into the next. Up north, Crawley and the Mid Sussex towns along the Brighton Main Line make a cluster of their own. Start with whichever half you live in.

By rail, the three main routes are the Brighton Main Line, the Arun Valley line and the West Coastway line, and Gatwick, the second largest airport in the UK, sits inside Crawley's boundary and employs a lot of people. For a daytime first meeting, Chichester has the Pallant House Gallery, Worthing its museum and art gallery, and Goodwood an outdoor sculpture park; a drink somewhere public afterwards is the natural next step.

The heart of the county is rural, but Petworth and Steyning are both less than nine miles from its centre, and the A272 runs right through it. For a match between the coast and Crawley, the Mid Sussex towns near the Brighton Main Line, such as Haywards Heath, are the natural compromise.
