Busy north, quiet south: Surrey hookups
A chalk ridge splits Surrey in two. The North Downs run from the south-west to the north-east, cut through by the Wey and the Mole on their way to the Thames, and they separate a crowded north from a much more rural south.
North of the ridge, the county runs into London: Staines-upon-Thames and Epsom belong to the capital's built-up area, which stretches as far as Guildford. Woking, the largest town at about 105,000, is in the north-west, Guildford, often seen as the historic county town, is in the centre-west, and Walton-on-Thames counts around 67,000. Along the western edge, Camberley and Farnham form a second built-up strip with Aldershot and Farnborough over the Hampshire line. South of the Downs lie the sandstone Surrey Hills and the Weald, where Horley and Godalming are the biggest places.
That ridge is the line to keep in mind when you arrange a meet. North of it, lots of people live close together with London next door; south of it, matches are fewer and further apart. Dorking, barely a mile from Surrey's geographic centre, is the obvious place to meet in the middle, with Leatherhead and Reigate both within six miles of it.
Seven in ten under 35, with London on the doorstep
Surrey's members lean young. Taking everyone in and around the county, close to a third are 18 to 24 and around four in ten are 25 to 34, so roughly seven in ten haven't reached 35. Under a fifth are 35 to 44, and only about one in eight is 45 or over. Women account for more than a third, a bigger share than the site-wide figure.
Ask where they live and the answers include London itself, Bromley, Hounslow, Uxbridge, Hackney, Hampstead and Greenwich, plus Camberley on Surrey's western edge.

Campus towns, Thames towns and the Surrey Hills
Surrey has universities in four of its towns:
- Guildford: the University of Surrey, with the Guildford School of Acting on its campus, and the University of Law
- Egham: Royal Holloway, University of London
- Farnham and Epsom: the University for the Creative Arts
Away from the campuses, the north of the county follows the Thames through Staines and Walton, and south of the Downs the Surrey Hills suit a second date for anyone who likes a long walk.
