The farms around the town grew oats, hops and flax instead, and its weekly market, running by 1279 at the latest, carried on until 1895. Go back further and the Domesday Book calls the place Cherchefelle; the name Reigate only turns up in the 1190s. A timber castle went up around the end of the 11th century and got stone walls a hundred years later, and an Augustinian priory was founded south of the centre.
