It sits 9.5 miles south of Charing Cross, a town of nearly 200,000 inside a borough of about 385,000, and it was a market town long before it had a London address. For centuries it belonged to Surrey: the Domesday Book found a church, a mill and around 365 people, and the town later made its living from charcoal, tanning and, for hundreds of years, brewing.

The railways turned it into a commuter town, and the mid-century rebuild, with its office blocks and the Whitgift Centre, turned it into a shopping one. For sex in Croydon, that history is useful. Fairfield Halls

Opened in 1962 and back in business since 2019 after a refit, with a large concert hall, the Ashcroft Theatre and the Arnhem Gallery under one roof. A concert or a play makes a natural second date.

Surrey Street Market

Right in the town centre, and where a TV police drama filmed many of its town-centre scenes. In daylight it needs no directions.

The murals

About 60 went up around the centre in 2018 for the Rise street art festival. Walking a few of them lets you talk without staring at each other across a table.

The south end of town

Towards the southern end, Croydon has smaller shopping streets full of restaurants, handy if a first drink turns into dinner.
