In 1850 Beckenham was a village of about 2,000 people, mostly fields and parkland. Then the railway arrived in 1857, the landowners began leasing and selling plots for villas, and by 1900 there were 26,000 residents. A place that went from village to town in fifty years knows how to move fast, and so can an evening here.
Today it's a south-east London town of about 60,700 people in the London Borough of Bromley, and it was part of Kent until 1965. Trains, trams and an easy first drink
With three main stations in town and two tram stops on the western edge, the easiest first meeting is one near transport, somewhere public, where either of you can leave when you like. Bromley is only 1.8 miles away and Croydon 3.7, so there's a choice of towns for a drink somewhere in the middle, and St Mary Cray, 6.4 miles off, is the longer trip for when you'd rather be nowhere near home.
