Bromley was a Kent market town, chartered in 1158, long before anyone drew a London boundary round it. A coaching road and a railway station that opened in 1858 turned a farming village into an urban town, and London's growth through the twentieth century did the rest: a municipal borough in 1903, part of the new London Borough of Bromley in 1965. An estimated 97,500 people lived here in 2021, 9.5 miles south-east of Charing Cross.
