For centuries the only dry way across the Thames landed on Southwark's doorstep.
That is how the district began. Around AD 43, Roman engineers decided the south bank here would take the first London Bridge, and the settlement at its southern end grew into the oldest part of South London. By the 12th century it was an ancient borough, which is where its other name, Borough, comes from. One corner of it, the Liberty of the Clink, became known for entertainment, and the old river frontage ran from just west of the Oxo Tower to St Saviour's Dock, where the River Neckinger once met the Thames.
