Ask two Londoners where to meet and the answer is rarely either of their front doors.
Soho is usually reckoned to cover about a square mile of the West End, between Oxford Street, Regent Street, Shaftesbury Avenue and Charing Cross Road. Oxford Circus, Piccadilly Circus, Tottenham Court Road, Leicester Square and Covent Garden stations all sit close, with Mayfair to the west, Fitzrovia to the north and St James's to the south. That makes it a natural place to meet in the middle.
The history is part of the pull. The land became a royal park in 1536, then a fashionable address for the aristocracy, with Soho Square laid out in the 1680s and St Anne's Church still a landmark. Since the 19th century it has been one of the capital's main entertainment districts, and a club here in 1948 is generally regarded as the first place in the UK to play modern jazz.

The circle skews young, with the 18 to 24s and the 25 to 34s each making up around a third of members. The 35 to 44s are a little under a fifth, and the over-45s add up to only around one in eight. Soho has no formally defined boundaries, so name a street or a station when you fix a place. The Soho Theatre, built in 2000 for new plays and comedy, stands near the heart of London's theatre area, and the London hookups page takes the wider view. Islington is 2.0 miles away and Southwark 2.4, with Camden, Chelsea and Kensington all inside three, so wherever your match lives, Soho is close to halfway.
