Fulham first turns up in the records in the year 691, as an Anglo-Saxon estate so big that it ran from Chiswick in the west to Chelsea in the south-east and took in what is now Hammersmith. The Manor of Fulham later became a parish, and from 1900 to 1965 Fulham was a borough in its own right before it merged with Hammersmith to make the one on today's map.
These days it is a riverside district of West London, 3.7 miles south-west of Charing Cross, sitting in a loop on the north bank of the Thames. After more than 1,300 years on the map, Fulham has seen every kind of arrival, so a stranger turning up for the evening is hardly news. It borders Hammersmith and the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, sharing West Brompton with the second, and across the water lie Putney and Wandsworth.
