Guildford probably takes its name from a ford over the River Wey, which still runs through the middle of town on its way to the Thames. The Normans built a castle here that later became a royal residence, the wool trade made the town prosper in the late Middle Ages, a charter of incorporation followed in 1488, and in 1653 the Wey Navigation opened, carrying produce, building materials and goods down to the Thames and on to markets in London.
