In July 2019, researchers from the University of Liverpool named Great Torrington the healthiest place to live in Britain. Low pollution, easy access to green space and health services, and hardly any shops won it the title.
Locals shorten it to Torrington, though Little Torrington and Black Torrington are separate villages in the same part of Devon, so be exact when you give directions. It's a market town of around 5,700 people, partly on high ground with steep drops down to the River Torridge, and it sits at the centre of Tarka Country, the countryside written into Tarka the Otter in 1927. It also has one of the most active volunteering communities in the UK. Lovely for the town, less handy if you'd like your love life kept off the grapevine. Close enough to meet, far enough from the neighbours
Barnstaple is the closest, about nine and a half miles away, and the natural pick for a first drink with someone you've only met online. Chulmleigh is about 12 miles off and Okehampton about 16, with Hartland and Holsworthy both inside 15. Launceston, over the border in Cornwall, is a little under 24.
