Barnstaple grew up at the lowest point where the River Taw could be crossed before the Bristol Channel, and from the 14th century it held a licence to export wool, which made the place rich. Later it shipped Irish wool in, until the harbour silted up and the town turned to shipbuilding, foundries and sawmills instead. The Victorian market building still stands, its tall glass and timber roof held up on iron columns.
