New faces every summer in Minehead

Each summer the holiday park adds several thousand people to a town of about 11,750, and Minehead has been in the visitor business for a long time. It had a small port by 1380, pleasure steamers kept calling after the trade moved to bigger harbours, and sea bathing revived its fortunes. Much of the Lower or Middle town was rebuilt after a fire in 1791, and the wide main shopping avenue, with its Edwardian-style buildings, went up in the early 1900s.

For a hookup, that makes two Mineheads. Out of season it's a coastal town on the edge of Exmoor, with Alcombe and Woodcombe folded into the parish and people who know each other. In season the town fills with visitors, and a lot of them aren't staying long. Sailing, windsurfing and golf are all on offer if you fancy a daytime date that isn't just a drink.

Minehead was becoming a place to retire to by 1851, and our members around it lean older too. Within 40 miles, about a quarter are 55 or over and nearly one in five is 45 to 54, so more than four in ten have passed 45. People in their late thirties and early forties make up a bit over a quarter, the under-25s roughly a fifth, and those aged 25 to 34 are scarce at under one in ten. Fewer than one in five are women.

A quick drive to Watchet, or over to Taunton

Watchet is under seven miles away, close enough for a drink that doesn't turn into an expedition. Taunton, the county town, is about 21 miles off, and so are Tiverton and Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge. On the map, Llantwit Major in the Vale of Glamorgan is only about 14 miles away, though the Bristol Channel sits in between.
