Penarth was a holiday town long before it was a place to hook up. In Victorian times it was promoted as the Garden by the Sea, with trains bringing holidaymakers from the Midlands and the West Country and day trippers from the South Wales valleys. Cheap package holidays abroad thinned the crowds from the 1960s, but the town still has its traditional seafront.

It sits about three miles south of Cardiff city centre, at the southern end of Cardiff Bay, and is the second largest town in the Vale of Glamorgan after Barry. More than 20,000 people live here, and the town is now mostly a dormitory for Cardiff commuters. The seafront is the obvious place to meet: public, easy to find and easy to leave.

A first drink is rarely a trek: Dinas Powys is under two miles away and Cardiff not much over three, with the city centre there if you want a bigger night. Caerphilly, nearly ten miles off, is there if you fancy a change of scene. Weston-super-Mare looks close on the map at about ten and a half miles, but it is across the water, so the road distance is a good deal longer.
