Only Caerphilly Mountain separates this town from the Cardiff suburbs of Lisvane and Rhiwbina. Caerphilly sits at the southern end of the Rhymney Valley, seven miles north of Cardiff and nine and a half west of Newport, inside the historic borders of Glamorgan and right on the line with Monmouthshire. It's the largest town in its county borough, with about 41,000 people at the 2011 census against roughly 176,000 in the borough as a whole, and its Welsh name, Caerffili, means the fort of Ffili.

The castle is the headline act. TV crews have used it for Merlin and for two Doctor Who episodes, and the site has mattered since the Romans built a fort here around AD 75. In the Middle Ages the surrounding area, Senghenydd, stayed in Welsh hands long after the Normans arrived, and only fell to an English lord in 1266. Caerphilly has form for letting people have their fun, too. In December 1976, when only a handful of councils would let one notorious band play at all, it was one of them, and the gig at the Castle Cinema went ahead with protesters and a prayer meeting outside. The town hosted the National Eisteddfod in 1950 as well.
