Hartland is as far north-west as Devon goes.
It's a large village of around 900 people at the centre of a rural neighbourhood, close to Hartland Point, where the coast stops facing the Bristol Channel and turns to face the Atlantic. A lighthouse stands on the point. The old harbour at Hartland Quay was built in the late 16th century and swept away in 1887, and the high church tower at Stoke is still a landmark for ships in the Bristol Channel.
The name probably comes from the Old English word for a deer, and until Tudor times this was an important port.
