In Scots the name is Week, so a weekend in Wick has a ring to it. Wick is a royal burgh at the top of Caithness, spread along both sides of Wick Bay with the River Wick running through the middle, and the south side has a story of its own: Pulteneytown was laid out in the 19th century by the British Fisheries Society and only became part of the burgh in 1902.

Just under 7,000 people live in the Wick area, and the town does a lot of work for the whole county. Out on the northern edge, the airport runs scheduled flights south and doubles as a base for helicopters heading to offshore wind and oil projects.

Road or rail to a first meeting

Wick sits on the main road between John o' Groats and southern Britain, the A99 and A9 together, and the Far North line ties the town to southern Scotland and to Thurso, the other burgh of Caithness. Short hops from here are Halkirk, about 15 miles off, and Thurso, about 19, while Kinbrace, at about 33, is more of an outing. For most matches there is a midpoint on a road you already know, and if one of you would rather take the train, look at the timetable together before you fix a night.
