Thurso hookups: as far north as Britain's towns go

Thurso is further north than the southern tip of Norway, and more than 500 miles from London. It is the northernmost town on the island of Great Britain, and on a map it is hard to get further up the page.

The River Thurso, all 34 miles of it, runs through the town and out into Thurso Bay and the Pentland Firth, and the river mouth doubles as a small harbour. That is an old arrangement. The Norse used Thurso as a port, and it traded with northern Europe until the 19th century, with fishing, linen-cloth and tanning behind it.

About 7,400 people live in the town and some 12,000 in the wider parish. Two roads cross here, the A9 running north to south and the A836 west to east, towards Bridge of Forss on one side and Castletown on the other. If you are explaining where to meet, the harbour at the river mouth is an easy landmark to name.

Halkirk on the doorstep, Wick a drive away

Halkirk is practically a neighbour, under six miles off, with Wick at about 19 and Kinbrace at about 28. Thurso is a long way from nearly everywhere else, so if your match lives further afield, agree who is travelling, and for how long, before anyone books anything. Swap a few messages and photos first, so nobody makes a long drive on a hunch.
