In 2018 the judges of a national high street contest toured the shortlisted streets of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and Alness went home as the Scottish champion. What won them over was a street that had reinvented itself, a place to find everything from florists and bridal wear to delis and bakeries.

The flowers are the older story. Through the 1990s and early 2000s the town kept winning competitions such as Scotland in Bloom and Britain in Bloom, and the effort helped regenerate whole corners of it. Just under 6,000 people lived here in 2022, near the mouth of the River Averon and the Cromarty Firth, with Invergordon three miles to the east and Evanton four to the southwest.

All of which suits a first meeting in daylight. A town that has collected prizes for its flowers has done half the romantic groundwork for you, so stroll the high street, see how the conversation goes and, if the spark isn't there, say goodbye outside a bakery and head home with no hard feelings.

Meeting halfway: Ardgay, Inverness or Nairn

Three Highland towns with pages of their own sit within 16 miles: Ardgay at 13, Inverness at 15 and Nairn at 16. A meeting in the middle is a short drive rather than an expedition, and Golspie, about 22 miles off, stretches the circle if you don't mind going further. Your daily matches take distance into account, so there's no harm in starting with whoever lives nearest.
