Ardgay comes from the Gaelic Àird Gaoith, which means high wind, and the village sits on the south-west shore of the Dornoch Firth in Sutherland. Bonar Bridge, where the River Carron flows into the Kyle of Sutherland, is a mile to the north and is the larger settlement, even though Ardgay is the postal town for the whole IV24 area.
