Elgin Hookups: Elgin Women Want to Meet

Hook up in Elgin, the commercial heart of Moray

Go back far enough and Elgin is a desert. The sandstone under this corner of Moray formed in desert conditions, and Quarry Wood on the edge of town, home to a formation nicknamed Cuttie's Hillock, gave up the fossils known as the Elgin Reptiles. The town that followed has been a market town, a royal burgh from the 12th century and a cathedral city, and it is now the administrative and commercial centre of Moray, with about 25,000 people.

The River Lossie runs through it, with the suburbs of Bishopmill to the north and New Elgin to the south. Lady Hill, once topped by a castle, is an easy landmark to name when you're arranging where to meet, and Birnie Kirk went up in 1140, fifty years before Elgin first appears in writing. Rainfall is quite low here, because the town sits in the rain shadow of mountains to the west and southwest, which is kind to a first date outdoors.

The roads and the railway do the connecting. The A96 between Aberdeen and Inverness comes straight through, the A941 links Lossiemouth with Rothes, Craigellachie and Dufftown, and Elgin has its own railway station. The RAF stations around the Elgin, Forres and Lossiemouth triangle have long been a major source of civilian jobs in the area.
