At about 1,500 people, Ullapool is the largest settlement in Wester Ross, roughly 45 miles north-west of Inverness. As well as the ferry, the harbour handles fishing vessels, leisure craft and cruise ships, and the A835 through the village forms part of the North Coast 500, so visitors arrive by sea and by road.

With ferries, cruise ships and a tourist road all bringing people through, a casual meeting suits Ullapool, and it calls for plain talk. Meet halfway in Inverness, or take the boat to Stornoway

By road: Inverness, about 45 miles away, is the obvious halfway point for a long drive. Ardgay is about 29 miles off and Alness about 36, Golspie roughly 44, and Portree and Kinbrace both around 51.
By boat: Stornoway sits some 50 miles away across the water, for anyone happy to take the ferry.
