Watford sex, close to London but not in it

A number of companies have put their head offices in Watford for a simple reason: it's near London and easy to get to. The same logic works when you're looking for a hookup. The town sits on the River Colne about 15 miles north-west of central London, close enough for a match coming out from the capital to reach you without any fuss.

It started small, as a market town on land that belonged to St Albans Abbey, with its market charter and St Mary's Church both dating from the 12th century. Travellers heading for Berkhamsted Castle and the royal palace at Kings Langley helped it along, and then the Grand Junction Canal in 1798 and the London and Birmingham Railway in 1837 did the rest, bringing paper mills, print works and breweries. Most of that industry has gone. The transport links are still the town's strong suit.

A walk in Cassiobury Park, or a trip to St Albans

Cassiobury Park, once the grounds of a manor estate and now open to everyone, is the easy answer for a daytime meeting: public, green, and somewhere you can walk and talk at the same time. If you'd rather start with a drink, save the park for the second meeting.

Or meet someone halfway. Chorleywood is about five miles away, Harrow six, and St Albans and Hemel Hempstead a little over seven. Uxbridge, Barnet and Hendon are all within nine. Wherever you settle on, tell a friend where you're going and when you expect to be back.
