Two universities share Uxbridge. Brunel University London is here, and so is a campus of Buckinghamshire New University, which gives the town a student population on top of everyone drawn in by its shops and offices.

It's a significant retail and commercial centre as well, and the place the London Borough of Hillingdon is run from, about 15 miles north-west of Charing Cross. Uxbridge was a Middlesex town until 1965, when it became part of Greater London. On its western side, where big old flour mills have been converted, the River Colne marks the border with Buckinghamshire. RAF Uxbridge is here too, home of the Battle of Britain Bunker.
