Two rivers, two conurbations and one small county: about 1.18 million people in roughly 210 square miles, and nearly all of it town.
Along the Tyne
Newcastle upon Tyne, the largest place in the county, stands on the north bank in the middle, with Gateshead facing it from the south bank. Out east, South Shields sits at the river's mouth, and Tynemouth is where the Tyne meets the North Sea.
Along the Wear
The city of Sunderland stands at the mouth of the Wear in the south-east of the county. Wearside's built-up area doesn't stop at the county line: it carries on into County Durham.
The county was stitched together in 1974 from the south-east corner of Northumberland and the north-east of County Durham, and five boroughs run it now: Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, North Tyneside and South Tyneside. The upshot is short hops. From the middle of the county, Gateshead is under three and a half miles away, Newcastle and Chester-le-Street about four, Jarrow five and a half, Sunderland seven and a half and South Shields under eight.
Cliffs, beaches and a lighthouse, from Tynemouth to Marsden
The county's North Sea coast is all tall limestone cliffs and wide beaches, which makes a daytime first meeting easy to arrange. Try a walk where the Tyne reaches the sea at Tynemouth, or out at Marsden in South Shields, where Souter Lighthouse was the first of its kind to run on electricity.
In town, pick a centre you both know. Newcastle, Gateshead and Sunderland all sit within about seven and a half miles of the middle of the county, so neither of you has far to come and either of you can head home early. The 18 to 24s and the 25 to 34s account for three in ten apiece, the 35 to 44s and the 45 to 54s for about one in six each, and the over-55s for fewer than one in ten. Just over a quarter are women.

Do I have to be in Newcastle to meet someone?
No. Newcastle is the county's largest settlement, but Gateshead, Sunderland, South Shields, Jarrow and Tynemouth all have pages of their own, and our members in and around Tyne and Wear also come from Durham, Consett and Peterlee.
Does the site cover Wearside as well as Tyneside?
It does. Sunderland has its own page and is one of the places our members in and around the county come from. Wearside's built-up area runs on into County Durham, and Durham itself is under ten miles from the middle of Tyne and Wear.
