Durham's centre is almost an island. The River Wear loops round it on three sides and leaves a narrow neck of land on the fourth, and inside the bend stand the cathedral and the castle, which together are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Monks founded the city in 995 to house a saint's relics out of reach of Viking raiders, and from the 1070s until 1836 it belonged to the County Palatine, a semi-independent patch ruled by the prince bishops as a buffer between England and Scotland.

The whole centre is a conservation area with more than 630 listed buildings, which makes for good backdrops. The university has been here since the 1830s and many of the inner streets are now shared student houses, so the old stones come with a student crowd.
