Drop Arbeia into a first conversation and you will look as if you did your homework. The town is a coastal port on the south bank of the Tyne's mouth, and with about 75,000 people at the 2021 census it is the fourth-largest settlement in Tyne and Wear, after Newcastle, Sunderland and Gateshead. It belonged to County Durham until 1974. North Shields and Tynemouth face it across the water, while Newcastle upon Tyne and Jarrow lie to the west, so you are not limited to your own bank.

Tynemouth over the water, Jarrow along the bank

Tynemouth is about a mile and a half away across the river, close enough that the water itself makes a fair halfway line, you on one bank and your match on the other. Jarrow is two and a half miles along the south bank. Sunderland is nearly seven miles south, Gateshead and Newcastle upon Tyne a little over seven, and Cramlington and Blyth around nine for anyone coming from Northumberland.
