A medieval priory and castle stand on the headland at Tynemouth, looking out over the river mouth and the North Sea, with the town centre lying just to the west. The name says it all, since the town stands on the north side of the mouth of the Tyne. It was long the easternmost town in Northumberland, and until 1974 it was a county borough that took in North Shields too.

Newcastle upon Tyne is eight miles up the river.
