No cities at all: Shropshire has 22 towns and a lot of countryside between them. Two of them carry much of the weight. Telford, the larger one, in the east, has around 138,000 people, about three in ten of everyone in the county, and has swallowed the old town of Wellington. Shrewsbury, the county town in the centre, has about 72,000. The other sizeable towns are Oswestry in the north-west, Newport, Bridgnorth in the south-east and Ludlow in the south, and the market towns run on from Market Drayton in the north-east right down to Clun, the smallest town of the lot, smaller even than some villages.
The county sits on the Welsh border, with Powys and Wrexham on the far side. Its south-west is high ground, the Shropshire Hills of the Long Mynd, the Stiperstones, the Clee Hills and Wenlock Edge, with the Wrekin standing alone west of Telford and Clun Forest further out. The north is a plain. Shrewsbury is where the main roads and railways meet, which makes it the natural crossroads for anyone travelling to meet someone.

Fewer than one in five of our members in and around Shropshire are women, well under the three in ten across the site. A woman here has no shortage of men to choose from; a man may need to cast his net a little wider. The crowd is young. Almost four in ten haven't turned 25 and a third are in their late twenties or early thirties, together more than seven in ten; after that the numbers thin out, with about a tenth in their late thirties or early forties, an eighth between 45 and 54, and under a tenth older still. Between them, Telford and Shrewsbury hold close to half the county's people, which makes either one a sensible bet for a first drink. Shrewsbury has the edge if your match is coming in by train, since so many of the county's railways pass through it.
Days out in the hills
Ludlow with its castle, Much Wenlock, the reputed birthplace of the Olympic movement, and the Ironbridge Gorge, birthplace of industry, are the county's big visitor draws, and the restored canals carry narrowboat holidays.
