Richmond's view of the Thames has an Act of Parliament all to itself, and conservation areas take in much of Richmond Hill, so the scenery is going nowhere. Even the name is borrowed. A royal palace went up here in the early 1500s and took its name from the original Richmond, up in North Yorkshire, and the town grew around it. In the 18th century a bridge joined the two banks, Georgian terraces spread around Richmond Green and up the hill, and many of the ones still standing are listed.

Richmond's borough has the least poverty in London, and the town is its largest commercial centre, an up-market shopping area built around George Street, The Quadrant and Hill Street. Richmond Green, ringed by those old terraces, is an easy place to find each other in daylight, and the narrow alleys off it lead through to George Street if you'd rather sit down somewhere. Saturday brings a farmers' market to Heron Square. Or follow the Thames, still tidal this far up, to the half-tide lock, where a footbridge crosses the river. Save Richmond Park for a second date: it starts at Richmond Gate at the top of the hill, it's the largest of London's Royal Parks, and its more than 600 red and fallow deer make better company than most small talk.
