Brentford sits at the mouth of the River Brent, right on the Thames, eight miles west of Charing Cross. It's also where the M4 corridor begins: the company headquarters along the Great West Road mark the start of it.

The riverside has changed a lot this century. Warehouses and docks that had fallen out of use were regenerated, and the waterfront was remodelled with shops, townhouses and flats, Brentford Dock among them. The centre is a compact grid of streets for everyday shopping and eating out, which is about all a first meeting needs.

Getting here is easy, with two railway stations of its own and Boston Manor Underground station on the north-west edge, where Brentford meets Hanwell. New Brentford, meanwhile, runs straight into Osterley and Syon Park, so the town blends into its neighbours on more than one side.

Richmond or Ealing, under two miles from Brentford

Richmond is 1.7 miles away and Ealing 1.8, with Acton just over two. Hounslow is under three, Twickenham and Southall about three, Hammersmith three and a half and Fulham under five. With that many places so close, there's no need to meet on your own doorstep unless you want to.

If your date is coming by Tube, Boston Manor is the natural place to say hello; by train, either of Brentford's two stations does the job, and the centre is right there for a first drink.
