Inverkeithing still has its medieval street plan, with a friary and a mercat cross to show for it.

The town was a royal burgh by 1159, and Scotland's Parliament met here in 1354, when trade had already made it important. The old centre is now a conservation area around the High Street, Bank Street, Townhall Street and Church Street, with 55 listed buildings, so a first meeting is rarely short of a landmark. The annual highland games and Lammas fair are among the oldest in Scotland, and quarrying, ship breaking and paper milling followed the Industrial Revolution.

About 5,000 people live in the town, but it almost joins up with North Queensferry, Jamestown, Rosyth, Hillend and Dalgety Bay, which widens the field for a hookup more than the population figure suggests.

By train, by bridge or on foot

3. On foot or by bike. The Fife Coastal Path and the Fife Pilgrim Way both pass through Inverkeithing, and so do National Cycle Routes 1 and 76. Dunfermline is under four miles up the road.
